For 13-year-old Cairns high school student, Willy Williams, life is not going smoothly. He has developed a passionate interest in girls, particularly the beautiful and mysterious Petra.

But Willy is also bedevilled by temptation and is torn between his desire for Petra, admiration for red-head Barbara, and hopeful lust for Marjorie, his best friend’s sister.

Worse, Willy has a secret enemy who makes his life a misery, as do the school bullies who pick on him at every opportunity. Complicating matters, his own poor choices do not help. Were the makeshift rockets and drone really good ideas?

Willy is also fascinated in all things that fly and is an avid model aircraft hobbyist. As a First-Year member of the Australian Air Force Cadets, his dream is to one day become a pilot in the RAAF. But even as an Air Cadet he has enemies and challenges.

Willy is mad keen on all aspects of flying and is famous around the school for his risky experiments. His current fad is airships. Not content with reading about them and making working models he decides to build his own- and to keep it secret from his parents.

The experiment almost ends in disaster during a weekend at his uncle's farm. But worse is to follow when his uncle is the victim of a very grisly murder the next night. It is Willy who discovers the body and during the following weeks he is tested both emotionally and physically as he struggles to cope with rejections in his love life, with bullying by a rival for Barbara's affections, and with his sanity as he tries to make sense of life.

He finds that there are rivals, false friends and dangerous enemies in the world of aircraft wrecks and vintage planes.

November- the Hot, Dry Summer in the ‘Gulf Country’ of Far North Queensland.  Willy Williams, a 16 year old Air Cadet and student pilot, makes an emergency landing in a light aircraft at an isolated cattle station on the edge of the vast wilderness of limestone ridges and dry savannah.   As the repaired aircraft is taxiing to take off a woman runs towards them pleading for help.    She is stopped by one of the men at the station who then shoots at the aircraft as it takes off.

This action thrusts Willy into the most desperate situation he has ever encountered.  To survive he must use all the knowledge and skills he has learned as an air cadet.  Over the next few days Willy is tested to the limits of his character and physical endurance and has to make hard moral choices.   He learns many tough lessons and, most importantly finds out what sort of person he actually is.
